This was yet another book by Stephen King on my “Stephen King” list. I was going into it without any prior knowledge other that the image on the book cover.

This novel tells the story of a teenager with supernatural abilities and how he had been used and abused by people most close to him.

As it is often the case with Stephen King, this book’s focus is abuse and victimhood. However, it is not shoved down the reader’s throat. It is a legitimately well-put-together narrative with highly action or emotionally charged moments properly spaced apart throughout the novel and then, of course, concentrated at the end.

By Stephen King’s standards, the characters are not fleshed out but well sketched out. We do not get a deep dive into any character’s past plus the past of each of their parents and each of their grandparents. We do get a glimpse at the past, but only when it is necessary to explain the preconditions of the plot.

The plot itself is sufficiently interesting and quite realistic when it comes to how people would act around a teenager with supernatural abilities.

In short, this is a well-paced cop story which I would recommend to read if you are into supernatural and cop stories.
