  Terror inverted

  I've never been to the United States of America. Nor will I ever be. I have made it a matter of principal not to set foot anywhere West of Madrid. Just like any other millennial in the World I have been exposed to a propagandized image of an American life since I was a little kid. But it was only recently that I have somewhat involuntarily began my remote deep dive into American culture through books, reviews and opinion pieces on YouTube.

  The latest height of this experience has been my journey through the bibliography of Stephen King.

  His short story "Here There Be Tygers" is a great little perspective on the coming-of-age anxt of being out there, in the wide wild world. The episode of anxiety depicted in the short story is that of answering a call of nature.

  A boy, Charles, needs to use the bathroom at his primary school, but is embarrassed to name the act in order to ask for his teacher's permission. He would rather use a euphemism. Not to give out the entire plot of this short story, the boy ends up being embarrassed but those who embarrassed him had something much worst waiting for them ...

  What caught my fancy was King's depiction of how a child's imagination manifests the horror of sin and delinquency bestowed by the adults around the child. For I believe what happened in the short story was the result of the boy using his euphemism in spite of his teacher. And to me this is a neat little metaphor for the burden nearly every American child suffers from of all the strictness and uptightness he or she was battered with while growing up going at least as far back as the Mayflower.

  But then there is a twist at the end of the short story turning Charles certain doom into his revenge. And that twist reflects the shy little hope I imagine every American child had at one point: life will punish you, my pious tormentor, not me ...
