Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell is a very popular young adult romance novel, often described as both sweet and heartbreaking.
The story follows two misfit teenagers in the 1980s — Eleanor, a girl dealing with a very difficult family situation, and Park, a boy who feels caught between cultures and expectations. Their relationship grows slowly through shared interests (like comics and music), and the book beautifully captures the intensity of first love: how awkward, exciting, and overwhelming it can be.
I really love it for: The authentic teenage voices – the awkwardness, the shyness, the small but powerful moments. The emotional depth – it’s not just a romance, but also a story about identity, family, and survival.
Some words about the author: Rainbow Rowell has a great sense of humor. In some places, the dialogues were so funny that I was laughing out loud. I really like the way the author conveys the feelings of teenagers who have found their first and only true love. I worried about Park and Eleanor as if they were my friends, and I even cried at the end. The ending is open, and I really like the space for reflection that the author left for the readers.
I highly recommend reading this light, romantic, and emotionally deep story.
